QuantiFarm Demo Event in Croatia | Exploring the Future of Aquaculture

On 29 July 2025, the QuantiFarm project organised a demonstration event in Šibenik, Croatia. The event focused on oyster production and brought together a group of participants, including Test Case leaders, farmers, and representatives from aquaculture companies.

Technology Demonstrated

The demonstration centred on a spectroscopic oyster quality analysis tool (SOQA), which is used to assess oyster quality. The tool estimates the amount of four specific parameters in oysters: glycogen, water, protein, and lipids. These measurements were presented as part of the technology demonstration during the event.

Structure of the Demonstration

The programme took place in Šibenik and followed a structured format. It began with a meeting that introduced the project and its objectives, followed by a presentation of the technology. Participants were shown a video of the ramp and an interview with a farmer. The programme also included a comparison between a farm using Digital Agriculture Technology Solutions (DATSs) and one not using them, as well as a presentation of the QuantiFarm Toolkit. The session concluded with a general discussion among participants.

Demonstration Conditions

The implementation of the demonstration was influenced by the specific conditions of the location. Access to the site requires either travelling by boat or descending a steep cliff and boarding a small raft on the water. Due to the associated safety risks, a live on-site demonstration was not conducted. Instead, video material was used, followed by a discussion with participants.

Participant Feedback

Feedback collected during the event indicated varying levels of familiarity with the technology. For some participants, the tool was new, while others reported a lack of clarity. There were also participants who had experience with similar technologies through collaborations with universities or previous projects. An outcome highlighted in the evaluation was the intention to continue sharing knowledge and practical experiences.

Moving Forward

As QuantiFarm continues its work across Europe, events like this reinforce the project’s mission:
to bridge the gap between technological innovation and real-world practice across all sectors, including aquaculture.
