MODULE 4

Training on various types of DATSs and their potential benefits, costs and sustainability impacts

Introduction: In this session, advisors will delve into the diverse spectrum of DATSs available today. Participants will gain a deep understanding of the various types of DATSs, their potential benefits, associated costs, and sustainability impact within the agricultural context. They will explore how to effectively scale these technologies, allowing for tailored implementation based on the unique characteristics and needs of different farms. By the end of this module, advisors will be well-equipped to understand their role in DATSs uptake and guide farmers in selecting, implementing, and adapting DATS to maximise their operational efficiency, crop yields, and overall sustainability, ensuring a customized fit for each farm’s specific conditions and needs.

Reflection questions:

  • Among the DATSs presented (e.g. decision support tools, sensors, robots, automatic systems), which one do you think would be most useful for the farmers you work with, either in crop or livestock production, and why?
  • How could technologies like Variable Rate Application (for fertilisers, pesticides, or irrigation in crops) or automated feeding and milking systems (in livestock) help reduce costs and improve sustainability on the farm? Can you think of an example from your region?
  • When recommending a new DATS, for crops (e.g. decision support system, soil or plant vigor sensors) or for livestock (e.g. health monitoring collars, smart feeders), what key things should you consider to ensure it really meets the farmer’s needs?
  • What challenges do you see in your area that make it harder for farmers to use DATSs in either crop or livestock farming? How can an advisor help farmers overcome these challenges?
